Can AI find your business?

Your customers have started asking questions instead of searching. The answer they get is assembled from whatever a machine can read about you.

Stewardr makes business websites readable and citable by AI assistants, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI answers. That means unblocking crawlers, putting your services in text a machine can parse, adding structured data, and answering real customer questions in plain words on the page. We work across Navi Mumbai, Mumbai and Thane.

What changed

One answer, not ten links

Search used to hand people a list. Ten blue links, and your website's job was to be one of them and then to convince.

Increasingly people ask instead of search, and get a single answer back, naming two or three businesses. There's no results page to be tenth on. You're either in the answer or you aren't.

You cannot edit that answer. There's no page to log into and correct what an AI says about your business. The only way to change it is to fix what the machine is reading.

First, can it read you at all?

Before any of this matters, a crawler has to get into your site and understand it. On most business websites it can't, and nobody has ever checked. The usual failures:

What we fix

Crawler access

Let the right bots in, GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, deliberately rather than by accident.

Readable content

Services, hours, areas served and prices as real text, not baked into graphics or PDFs.

Structured data

Schema markup so a machine knows you're a business, what type, where, and what you offer.

Answer-first writing

The answer in the first sentence, then the detail. It's how extraction works and it also reads better.

Entity consistency

Your name, address and description identical across your site, Google listing and directories.

Off-site presence

Most AI citations come from what others say about you, not what you say about yourself.

Have a look at stewardr.com/robots.txt. It explicitly welcomes every major AI crawler. If we're going to sell this, our own file should prove it.

An honest note on what nobody knows yet

This field is two years old and moving fast. Anyone who tells you they can guarantee your business appears in ChatGPT's answers is selling you something they cannot deliver, there is no submission form, no ranking dashboard, and no placement to buy.

What can be done is straightforward and unglamorous: make sure the machine can reach your site, understand what you do, and find clear answers rather than marketing language. That's within anyone's control, it helps conventional search at the same time, and it's what we do.

Questions

What people ask about this

How do I make sure ChatGPT recommends my business?

You can't make it. What you can do is remove the reasons it wouldn't: unblock AI crawlers in robots.txt, put your services and location in readable text, add structured data, keep your Google listing current, and build mentions on sites the models already trust. Anyone selling guaranteed AI placement is selling something that doesn't exist.

What is AEO, and is it different from SEO?

AEO, answer engine optimisation, is about being cited inside AI-generated answers rather than ranking on a results page. It overlaps heavily with good SEO: clear structure, fast pages, accurate structured data and genuinely useful content help both. It isn't a separate discipline so much as a different destination.

Why doesn't AI mention my company when people ask?

Usually because it can't read you, or because nothing else on the web says much about you. Crawler blocks and image-only content cause the first. A thin Google listing, no directory presence and no third-party mentions cause the second.

Does blocking AI crawlers protect my content?

It stops your content being used, and it also stops your business being recommended. For a publisher that trade may be worth making. For a local business trying to get found, blocking is almost always working against yourself, and most sites that block are doing it by accident.

Is this worth doing for a small business in Mumbai?

It's cheap and it compounds, which is a good combination for a small business. The work also improves normal search performance, so it isn't a bet on one outcome. Whether AI referrals become a major channel for local services is still genuinely uncertain, but being unreadable has no upside either way.
