How do you get more Google reviews?

Almost every business under-asks, replies to none, and then wonders why the competitor down the road looks more established.

The single most effective method is to ask in person at the moment of satisfaction, and hand over a short link that opens the review box directly. Google provides this link inside your Business Profile. Most businesses fail not because customers are unwilling but because asking is awkward, the link is long, and nobody owns the job. Replying to every review, including old ones, is the other half, and it is visible to every future customer reading them.

Asking

Why most businesses get so few

Not because customers refuse. Because nobody asks, or asks badly. Three fixable problems account for almost all of it.

A QR code at the counter or on the invoice, pointing at your short review link, removes almost all the friction. It costs nothing and it is the single change that most reliably moves the number.

What you must not do

Do not buy reviews, and do not offer discounts in exchange for them. Both breach Google's policies, and the detection has become considerably better. A batch of suspicious reviews can get the whole listing suppressed, which is a far worse position than having few reviews. Also avoid asking only your happy customers in a systematic way, filtering like that is against the rules and, more practically, a page of nothing but five stars reads as bought.

Replying

Replies are public and permanent. They are read less by the reviewer than by the next prospective customer working out what kind of business you are.

To good reviews

Briefly, specifically, and without a template. Four identical replies saying "Thank you for your valuable feedback" is worse than no reply, because it reads as automated. Mention the specific thing they praised. It takes twenty seconds and signals that a real person is paying attention.

To bad reviews

This is where most reputational damage is either done or undone, and the instinct to defend yourself is the wrong one. A calm, non-defensive reply that acknowledges the problem and offers to sort it out privately does more for the ten people reading it than winning the argument ever could. Never dispute their account line by line in public, and never mention personal details, for a clinic in particular, responding with any specifics about a patient's treatment is a serious problem regardless of what they said first.

Old reviews still count

Reviews from two years ago with no reply are still on display and still being read. Working back through them is a couple of hours of work that visibly changes how the listing reads. It is one of the highest-return afternoons available to most local businesses.

The unfair one

You can request removal of a review that breaches Google's policies, spam, a competitor, abusive content, or one clearly about a different business. You cannot get one removed for being unfair or wrong, which is the frustrating and common case. The realistic answer there is to reply well and bury it with genuine recent reviews. A single one-star among forty recent fours and fives reads very differently from a single one-star among six.

Why this matters more than it used to

Reviews were always social proof for humans. They are now also a primary source AI assistants read when deciding which businesses to recommend. A listing with recent, replied-to reviews gives those systems something to work with; one with eleven unanswered reviews from 2021 gives them very little. That connection is covered on the AI visibility page, and the mechanics of the listing itself on the Google Business Profile page.

Questions

What people ask about this

How do I get my Google review link?

Open your Google Business Profile, find the option to ask for reviews, and copy the short link it provides. It opens the star rating box directly, which removes most of the friction that loses people.

Can I offer a discount for a Google review?

No. Incentivised reviews breach Google's policies and risk the listing being suppressed. Asking politely at the right moment produces better results with none of the risk.

Should I reply to every review?

Yes, including old ones and including short ones. Replies are read by future customers far more than by the reviewer, and a listing where every review has a considered reply reads very differently from one where none do.

How do I remove a bad Google review?

You can report reviews that breach Google's policies, spam, competitors, abuse, or reviews of the wrong business. A review that is simply unfair or inaccurate generally cannot be removed, so the practical response is a calm public reply and more recent genuine reviews.

How many reviews does a small business need?

There is no threshold, but recency matters more than volume. Twenty reviews from the last year is stronger than eighty that stop in 2022, because both customers and search systems weight recent activity.
